Sport Single Pitch Instructor (SSPI)

The ClimbMT Sport-Climbing Single Pitch Instructor Program is designed to enable instructors to proficiently facilitate and instruct sport rock climbing in a single pitch setting. The programme is for currently active sport climbers that have a real desire to teach sport climbing in a single pitch setting. Candidates should be passionate sport climbers who have their own equipment, regularly climb and have at least five years of outdoor sport climbing experience. Candidates could be commercially active climbing instructors, volunteer leaders, summer camp professionals or climbers who wish to undergo additional training, experience and certification to gain employment as a climbing instructor in the outdoor adventure/education industry.

The SSPI Course is not a “climbing” course. It is an instructor training course for active, proficient sport climbers and for current climbing instructors who wish to gain SSPI certification. The SSPI course presents many instructor specific topics such as professionalism, teaching techniques, risk management, group site organisation, climbing site conservation/Leave No Trace and assistance/rescue skills.

This course is accredited under the UIAA Mountain Qualifications Label system. The UIAA Mountain Qualifications Label (TSL) is a voluntary certification that is awarded to an existing or a new system of training in mountaineering and climbing that meets the requirements of the relevant UIAA Training Standards. The UIAA Mountain Qualifications Label demonstrates that a system of training meets relevant standards as determined by the UIAA Training Standards validators.

Overview

Syllabus

Terrain

Single Pitch Instructor terrain consists of outdoor bolted crags that are climbed without intermediate belays, i.e. no multipitch climbing. Maximum route length is such that the climber can be lowered to the ground from the top of the pitch, although topography and communication requirements will often shorten this length. Approaches and descents to and from climbing venues may involve abseiling but otherwise present no difficulties such as significant route finding, scrambling, or short roping.

Validity

Certification is valid for three years from assessment as long as the candidate holds current First Aid certification and ClimbMT Membership.
