Competition Tiers:

There will be three tiers of competition, split into Females and Males:

1. Youth

This is the category for our young boulderers, split into five age aligned tiers as follows:

  • Youth D – Under 12
  • Youth C – Under 14
  • Youth B – Under 16
  • Youth A – Under 18
  • Junior – for youth born 2004/2005

In the spirit of a true national showdown, the Youth category of the championship is a stage open to youths possessing a valid Maltese residence card or Maltese citizenship. For those who don’t meet these criteria, fear not – the Amateurs & Masters category is there for boulderers of other nationalities / residence status.

2. Open category

As the name implies, the Open category is for all adults and youth who can cut it with the grown ups. As with the Youth category, the Open category is open to all climbers who are in possession of a valid Maltese residence card or Maltese citizenship. Any boulderers who do not qualify may still participate in the Amateurs & Masters category.

3. Amatuers & Masters

This is the category for those climbers out there who want to get a taste of the competition. Whether you’re a venerable master or a complete beginner, this is a great wave where having fun is the goal, and winning is only a secondary objective. Climbers who do not qualify to participate in the Youth or Open category can take part in our Amateurs & Masters wave.

If you have any doubts about which category you qualify for please don’t hesitate to contact our Youth & Competitions officer.

Competition Format:

The competition will follow the classic format. Climbers will have a three hour window to complete as many of the 30 qualifying boulder problem as possible. Careful route reading is a must – our judges will count the number of attempts it takes to complete a boulder!

The top 6 ranked climbers from the Youth Junior, A, B, and Open category will proceed to a finals round that will crown the National Bouldering Champions for each category.
