UIAA Management Committee and Commissions to meet in Malta

The Malta Climbing Club is delighted to announce that it shall be hosting the “Spring Meetings” of the UIAA (Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme) management committee in Malta from the 3rd to the 7th May 2019.  The UIAA Safety, Ice-Climbing and Youth Commissions shall also be meeting here at the same time.

This collaboration came about following the acceptance of the MCC as a full member of the UIAA two years ago during the General Assembly in Iran, when Club President Simon Alden introduced the club and it’s activities as well as general information about climbing in the Maltese Islands, to the assembly.  The club was subsequently invited to consider hosting the “Spring meetings” of the UIAA in Malta in 2019 and a lot of effort was put into putting a proposal together offering the right combination of accommodation, meeting facilities and excursion / dining possibilities.  The MCC then submitted the proposal in October 2018, at the UIAA General Assembly which was held in Mongolia.

Since then both the UIAA and the MCC have been in constant contact with the result that the proposal was accepted by the Executive Board of the UIAA in January this year.

This is a first for Malta, and will place the island firmly at the centre of the climbing and mountaineering world for a weekend.   In addition to the meetings, a programme of activities is planned to show the delegates the best of what the island has to offer, as well as give them a chance to sample the great climbing Malta offers.

The MCC would like to thank Conventions Malta (the conference arm of the MTA) and Sport Malta for supporting this event.

We look forward to collaborating with the UIAA and the local climbing community to make this event a success.
