New lower offs at Victoria Lines

Thanks to Kurt Vella Haber, Secretary of the MCC, climbing at the “Stairway to Heaven” crag in Wied Anglu just got a whole lot easier.  This crag is a little gem, with some short hard trad routes on perfect limestone – if a little dusty because of a mossy covering in places.   It is found upstream from the defensive wall where it crosses the valley.  Park as for Crazy Horse Cave then follow the defensive wall down into Wied Anglu (the valley on the left).  To reach the top of the crag, when the wall crosses the valley strike out left skirting below a buttress and scramble across to the lower offs.   Not many people climbed these routes as setting up the lower-offs was a bit complicated using threads set back from the edge.  Kurt has now remedied this with 6 new lower offs with bolts very kindly sponsored by local climbing equipment supplier Charles Ellul of Wallrats.  Kurt used a Hilti cordless drill kindly donated to the club by Hilti International, represented locally by Panta Lesco.

Routes affected are “Highway to Hell”, “Roads to Roam”, “Stairway to Heaven”, “Walls to Fall”  and “Stunts to Cuff”.  Kurt also removed some very spiny vegetation which was blocking the end of the left hand routes.  Enjoy!
